Their inability to progress to the advance stages of the National Science and Maths quiz has been the non-availability of a quiz bell to practise with and other resources.

How fast you are at pressing a quiz bell in answering questions is one of the tricks to winning the National Science and Maths quiz (NSMQ).

Schools like Nkwatia Senior High School have lacked the equipment, affecting their output and performance at the quiz competition.

This year’s quiz team are lucky as old students of the school have come to their aid with a quiz bell and other educational equipment valued at GH¢30,000 to help them advance to the final stage of the competition.

The students shared their challenge hitherto without a quiz bell in their preparation stages.

“This is a timely support for us. We couldn’t progress to an advanced stage because we were slow in pressing the bell.”

Another added: “We won’t disappoint them, our confidence level is up now. The other schools should watch out for us.”

President of the Old Student Association Dr Isaac Osei Koranteng said it was imperative the students are empowered for the competition and encouraged them to pursue sustainable careers after school.

“We as old students believe that with the right support, students can achieve any results. Beyond our support, we have taken them through career guidance as well. It’s a motivation to spur them out for greatness.”

The headmistress of the school, Wilhemina Obuobia-Atakora, commended the old students for their support.

“The old students have done well. Their support would augment the school management’s intervention.”

She, however, appealed for the completion of a stalled assembly hall and improvement of access to water for students with a population of 1,600.

“We have an increasing population. The old hall for all purposes cannot contain the numbers, students eat in batches. That’s worrying. We need the facility to be completed and handed over to us. We also need the water situation improved so avoid the stress students go through to access water.”
