The Minority has accused the government of using excessive force in the fight against illegal small-scale mining activities (galamsey) in the country.
At a press conference in Parliament, lawmaker for Yapei Kusawgu, John Jinapor said the government is disregarding the laws and constitution in the exercise to tackle galamsey.
This, he said, must be condemned.
His comments come after some illegal small-scale miners were arrested on a concession belonging to AngloGold Ashanti and allegedly tortured by being made to swim in mud.
This occurred last Friday July 15.
Mr John Jinapor who is also the Minority spokesperson on Mines and Energy, called for a thorough investigation in the matter.
“We strongly condemn the use of brute, excessive and disproportionate force in the so-called fight against illegal mining. This flagrant disregard for our laws and constitution under the Akufo-Addo government is unfortunate and must be roundly condemned.”
The government has been dealing with the activities of the illegal small miners who are destroying the water bodies and the environment in general.
