In Ghana’s quest to fight Diabetes, a non-governmental organizations called Lions Clubs in Ghana has organized a free health screening exercise for about 550 residents of Teacher Mante in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.

The gesture, which is aimed at creating more awareness on diabetes, was spearheaded by Accra Metro, Accra Pheonix, Achimota Golf and Nsawam Hill Lions Clubs and supported by Frankel Foundation for Diabetes.

The beneficiaries were taken through diabetes education programme, highlighting some high-risk causes such as lack of exercise, obesity and family history.

Dr Afia Nyarko Boakye, President of Accra Metro Lions Club, in an interview with Onua FM, noted that the gesture was part of the Club’s humanitarian services to deprived communities in Ghana.

She said it was also in line with Lions Club International’s plan to set the month of November aside for diabetes awareness globally by its members.

Dr Boakye, who is also a Lecturer at the Ghana Communication Technology University, reiterated the need for people to get screened to know their diabetes status.

This, according to her, will enable them detect the risk factors of getting the diseases and also help to manage cases to prevent any future complications.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayensuano Constituency, Teddy Addi Safori, has said that the screening exercise will aid his constituents to remain healthy to contribute towards the development of the community.

Mr Safori donated boxes of drugs to health facilities within the Teacher Mante area and highlighted on the need for the public to go for regular check-up.
