The capacity of Member of Parliament for Suame Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to chair the manifesto committee of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is never in doubt, the spokesperson of the Bawumia campaign team, Mr Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has indicated.

Miracles Aboagye says he does not see any connection between the resignation of Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Majority Leader in Parliament and his appointment as chair of the campaign team of Dr Bawumia.

His comments come after the Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr Rasheed Draman cautioned the NPP to be careful so that the changes in the Majority leadership do not deepen cracks within the party.

Dr. Draman’s comments come on the back of former majority leader and minister for parliamentary affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, tendering in his resignation in the late hours of Wednesday, February 21.

Speaking to Alfred Ocansey, host of Ghana Tonight, Dr. Draman maintained that broad consultation must be embraced by both the NPP and NDC in the event of changing their leaders in parliament.

“It is sad for our parliament but most importantly, it is not a motivation for others to give their all in terms of their contribution to their party and so on.

“The party has every right, as the leader has said, in terms of making decisions but the key word is consultation and carrying everybody along,” said Dr. Draman, urging both parties to “learn this very fast.”

Also speaking on the same show, Miracles Aboagye said when asked about how the leadership of the party is dealing with the cracks “I am not aware of any cracks challenges in the party as well.

The manifesto committee has been released and chaired by Honorable Osei Kyei- Mensah-Bonsu and Honourable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah. We have also released the list of the subcommittee chairs for the various sectors who have been mandated by the flagbearer to put together a comprehensive manifesto for the election 2024.”

He further stated when asked whether the resignation of Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Majority Leader is connected to his appointment as chair of the manifesto committee that “The most respectful thing to do is to allow him to speak for himself and clarify some of these things but for now, I don’t see any connection whatsoever between the two.

“The manifesto committee was going to be set up anyway and I don’t think anybody doubts the capacity of honorable Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to lead that committee. I don’t think anybody doubts the capacity of Kyie-Mensah Bonsu.”
