A former Member of Parliament for Salaga South Constituency, Alhaji Abubakari Ibrahim Dey, has planted 1,000 trees at his hometown of Sulmunchu in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.

This brings to 60,000 the total number of trees planted by the former Salaga South legislator over the last four years.

According to the former MP, Ghanaians should not wait for a national exercise to show their sense of patriotism but to always be ready to commit to activities that will positively impact their social life.

He noted that trees play significant roles in the preservation and conservation of the environment.

“We all know the importance of trees to our living as human beings and like the saying goes, ‘when the last tree dies, the last man dies’ let’s protect our trees by planting more.

He added his voice to calls for the banning of chainsaw logging and commercial charcoal burning in the Savannah Region.

“This is an opportunity to support the traditional authorities to stop all forms of logging and commercial charcoal burning which is negatively depleting the environment.”

The Green Ghana project is an initiative by the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry to plant five million trees in a single day.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo early this year encouraged Ghanaians to plant more trees.

The exercise is taking place in the three regions of the north.
