The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) has cut sod for the construction of a security entrance school gate and the renovation of the dilapidated kitchen facility for the Akropong School for the Blind to aid safety and security for both students and teachers.
The Akropong School for the Blind, which was established in 1945 in the Eastern Region and with a current student population of over 450 partial and total visually impaired children, has not witnessed major renovation works since its inception.
Even though philanthropists and benevolent organizations have been a support over the years with great impacts, the school is still faced with numerous challenges.
In a needs assessment approach, the Ghana National Gas Company accepted a request to support the School with a comfortable befitting kitchen facility and a modern entrance gate to give both students and teachers sound mind that the school is safe.
Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony, the headmistress of the school, Veronica Dery, indicated that lack of a secure security gate was exposing the school to serious security threats as strangers intrude the school at odd hours.
She was very thankful to GNGC for the timely intervention and also called on others to come to their aid.
According to the Assistant Manager in charge of Community Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility at GNGC, Edomgbole Nwiah Anyimah, the project, which involves the construction of a security gate, re-roofing, floor and walls facelift, among other things, on the old facility is expected to be completed within six months.
He assured of GNGC’s full commitment to all projects it embarks on.
Meanwhile, Board Chairman of the School Nana Osim Kwatia II, who doubles as the Gyasehene of Akuapem Traditional Area, lauded GNGC for the timely intervention and kind support.
A Community Relations Officer at GNGC, Mr Isaac Ansah, who is visually impaired and an old student of Akropong School For the Blind, used the opportunity to urge students in the school to maximize their efforts in studies to attain greater heights.
