The Ghana Education Service (GES) has referred the intervention of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the dismissal of some eight students of Chiana Senior High School to the school’s Disciplinary Committee (DC) for action.

According to the Service, the punishment meted out to the students was based on a recommendation by the Committee.

“Thus, Management has referred the matter to the school’s Disciplinary Committee to explore alternative sanctions other than dismissal,” a statement issued by the Head of Public Relations at GES, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, on Friday, January 13 said.

The dismissal of all eight students stirred controversy, leading to an intervention from the President.

Many considered it too harsh and called on GES to reconsider the decision.

Following President Akufo-Addo’s intervention on Friday morning, the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, directed the Service to meet and consider other alternative but corrective measures against the students.

According to Friday’s statement by the GES, the students have been asked to report to the Headmistress for further directions.

“Management acknowledges the interest of stakeholders in ensuring that these students are reformed in the best possible way.”

Already, some of students have promised to obey any other punishment to be recommended against them, thanking the President for the intervention.
