Authorities at the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in Ashanti Region have confiscated unregistered herbal and Orthodox medicinal products totaling GH¢700,000 during a swoop at Alabar in Kumasi.
The exercise is expected to be carried out in other markets within the Region to clamp down on those peddling in unregistered products in the region.
A 35-year-old female trader, who is the owner of the seized items, is currently in police custody.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Ashanti has intensified its market surveillance exercise and says it is on a high alert to clamp down on illegal pharmaceuticals which include body enhancement products at retail markets in the Ashanti Region.
The FDA officials and police seized the items from a single retail shop after they swooped the Alabar market, which has become a common place for the sale of unregistered and unwholesome drugs.
The items included a variety of aphrodisiacs, unregistered herbal products, orthodox pain relievers, and cosmetics.
Some of the seized products had engraved on them unknown languages, while others were conspicuously sourced from the U.S A.
The Authority as part of the exercise recently collaborated with the police and arrested three persons for similar offenses. They are being processed for court.
Ashanti Region Head of the Food and Drugs Authority, John Laryea Oddai Tettey, expressed serious concern about the influx of unregistered and wholesome medicinal products in the markets.
He said the products were a mixture of indigenous and exotic consumables.
“These products will never be approved by the FDA . How these products get into our market remains unknown,” he stated
