The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has allayed fears of Ghanaians, especially residents in the Greater Accra Region, following earth tremors experienced on Monday, December 12.

The Authority confirmed in a press release that three tremors were recorded on the day.

It said the main shock was recorded around 11:53am with an epicenter between Wiaboman and Bojo beach, about 575m into the sea.

There were concerns that the Authority could not predict the occurrence with some expressing worry, particularly on social media, about the situation.

But in the press release issued by the Acting Director-General, the Authority indicated that such occurrences are natural “and therefore difficult to predict”.

“However, education and sensitisation of the public on awareness and response during such events are key,” it said.

The Authority urged the public to remain calm and go about their normal businesses, a call reiterated earlier in the day by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Monday’s major shock is said to be 3.5 on the Richter scale with the foreshock measured at 2.1 while the aftershock, recorded at 11:58am, measured 1.8.

“The recorded magnitudes are indicative of the extent of the tremor.

“The magnitude of even the main shock is a minor tremor and so it is not expected to cause damage.”

Areas that experienced the tremors are Dansoman, Mataheko, and Weija and slightly felt in Legon, Amasaman, and Accra Central.
