The Deputy Youth Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Edem Agbana, has dared the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to name the member of his party who presented an e-levy-designed cake to the celebrate the birthday of the Majority Leader.
The celebration of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s 65th birthday with a cake designed in the inscriptions of the controversial e-levy has further raised resentment in certain quarters.
The Office of the Majority Leader has since denied that the e-levy cake was the official cake for the celebration.
Some members of the NPP have indicated that the cake was presented by the Minority to mock the Majority, the two caucuses having slugged it out in Parliament in an effort to pass the levy.
But speaking to Media General‘s Johnnie Hughes at the start of the Yentua demonstration – meant to register displeasure against the e-levy – on Thursday, February 10, Mr Agbana insisted that the cutting of such a cake is even the “height of insensitivity” and “gross disrespect” to the people of Ghana.
He said at a time Ghanaians are suffering, a cake of such design is cut to spite them in the face.
On rumours that the cake was presented by members of his party in Parliament, Mr Agbana said: “It is never true!”
“We have dared them that they should name the MP who presented the cake.”
He said assuming without admitting that the cake was indeed presented by the Minority in Parliament, “you have to accept it, cut it and celebrate?”
He indicated that that is a sign that the NPP government can just act blindly.
