COVID-19 increased domestic fire cases in 2020 – GNFS

    The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana led to the increment of domestic fire cases in the country last year, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has said.

    The Head of Public Affairs at the Ghana National Fire Service who made these revelations explained that there were more people in their homes and that resulted in the rampant domestic fire outbreaks.
    Divisional Officer Grade I (DOGI), Ellis Okoe Robenson gave these explanations in an interview with Onua TV’s Maakye on Monday hosted by Adwoa Konadu-Yiadom and Afia Tagor.
    Mr. Okoe Robenson  said there were “almost 5,900 fire cases within the year. We nearly entered into 6000 because of the COVID-19”.
    “In 2019, it was a little over 4,600 but what led to the increase in 2020 was the COVID because there were always people at home always”.
    He further said the rampant fire outbreaks in various markets were as a result of overcrowding.
    He explained that every market was built to contain a particular number of people but because of overcrowding.
    “There have been some fires in the markets after the elections. Several fire cases went up because markets were built for a particular magnitude of people but because of the festivities and increase in populations, these markets have increased numbers and that has led to some fire outbreaks.
