The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, who was reported on Saturday to have contracted Covid-19, is in a stable condition, the President has said.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo indicated that Mr Agyemang-Manu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Dormaa Central Constituency, contracted the disease “in line of duty”.

He made this known in his 11th update to the nation on measures taken by his government in the fight to contain the spread of the virus.

After reports of the Health Minister’s status went public, some other reports countered these and stated that he was rather “resting” at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

He is said to have been admitted on Tuesday, June 9, nonetheless.

Confirming the earlier reports, President Akufo-Addo wished him a speedy recovery.

Mr Agyemang-Manu appears to be Ghana’s high-profile government official to have contracted the deadly disease.

On Friday, June 12, the Chief Executive of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Anthony Kobina Kurentsir Sam, lost the battle with the disease at UGMC.

President Akufo-Addo paid tribute to Egya Sam, as he affectionately called him, and underscored his efforts in recently enforcing social distancing in some key markets in Sekondi and Takoradi.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace in the bosom of the Almighty until the last day of resurrection when we shall all meet again.”

Mr KK Sam’s one-week commemoration was initially scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 20 but as a result of his party’s parliamentary primaries, it has been postponed by one more week.

The president admitted that the late mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi was instrumental in the struggles of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) “and in the work of the Akufo-Addo government”.
