The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) has begun distribution of sanitary pads to needy girls in schools within Techiman and Kintampo of the Bono East Region of Ghana.
So far, girls in Traa M/A, Kitabom JHS, Twimia R/C Basic School and Fiaso JHS, within Techiman, have received sanitary pads from AWLA.
Many more girls will benefit from this support, the Association has assured.
The intervention forms part of AWLA’s strategy of ensuring that adolescent girls are healthy and remain focus on their studies, given that lack of access to sanitary pads due to poverty contributes to poor menstrual hygiene management and school absenteeism among girls in communities.
This is affecting education of many girls who are also ‘suffering’ from sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the beneficiary communities.
Since 2020, AWLA has also organized SGBV sensitizations in schools and communities for basic school girls and boys, as well as for parents and community stakeholders.
In addition, the organization has created girls’ clubs in many basic schools.
These efforts are aimed at ensuring the presence of a core group of empowered men, women, boys and girls who are capable of ‘fighting’ SGBV in their schools and communities in the collective quest to contain the menace which continues to put the education of many girls and Ghana’s agenda for inclusive and sustainable national development in jeopardy.
