Birim North District Chief Executive (DCE) nominee Raymond Nana Damtey has been disapproved by assembly members.

Mr Damtey had 24 ‘No’ votes and 14 ‘Yes’ votes as result of voting on his nomination on Monday, October 11.

The ‘Yes’ votes represent 36.8 percent, a result that cannot guarantee a second round of voting for the nominee.

The ‘No’ votes represent 68.2 percent.

A total of 38 assembly members were present and partook in the confirmation exercise.

A section of chiefs in the Abirem Traditional Area had held press conferences against the renomination of Raymond Nana Damtey, accusing him of disrespect.

The Eastern Region Minister, Seth Acheampong, who monitored the exercise, was disappointed at the outcome of the elections.

He, however, conceded it was a democratic dispensation, hence the will of the Assembly members must be respected even though they failed to confirm the President’s nominee.

Presiding Member George Krobea Asante and New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman Barnor Barimah Banor are said to be eyeing the post.

So far, 25 MDCE nominees have been confirmed in the Eastern Region.

Two nominees – for Birim Central Municipal Assembly and New Juaben North Municipal Assembly – are awaiting second round of elections.

Five more nominees are waiting for their elections.
