The family of the man who committed suicide after he had killed his mother-in-law at Apremdo, in the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipality of the Western Region, may not be able to bury their relative in the town.

This follows the decision by the Apremdo Divisional Council not to allow the young man to be buried at the town’s cemetery.

Emmanuel Kwofie, 33, domiciled in Spain, had come home for holidays but killed his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Nkrumah, aged 66, at Apremdo and committed suicide.

The incident, which happened on Sunday, August 15, sent shock waves through the Apremdo community as, according friends of Emmanuel, he was of noble character.

But reports were rife that he committed the act following a reported decision by the mother-in-law not to allow him marry her daughter.

Chief of Apremdo Nana Egya Kwamina XI, in an interview on Connect FM‘s Orekodo on Wednesday, September 1, said the Council has taken a decision not to permit the burial of Emmanuel Kwofie at the Apremdo Cemetery.

“This is nothing new. I believe you are fully aware that in any and every community, there are laws and if you like traditions that hold the place together. And, so, there are things that we must not encourage for it to gain grounds and fester. And one of such is this abominable act that has been committed.”

According to him, the decision was taken by the Council in consonance with traditions of the land.

Meanwhile, Connect FM is reliably informed that the family intends to plead for clemency to enable them bury their relative in the community.

“This decision of the Council could be reversed once the family is able to meet requirements needed for the necessary pacification and cleansing,” the Chief had earlier indicated.
