C/R: 3 dead, many trapped in collapsed mining pit at Breman Brofoyedu

Three people have died as others are feared trapped in an illegal small scale mining (galamsey) pit at Breman, near Diaso in the Upper Denkyira district of the Central Region.

The lifeless bodies of 2 women and a man were retrieved from the caved in pit Wednesday dawn.  Eyewitness say there a number of artisans trapped in the pit.

Although the number of people trapped in the pit is unconfirmed, Assembly member for Breman, Francis Agyapong who rushed to the scene told host of Akoma FM’s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma, Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that the whole community has been thrown into state of mourning and grief.

“At this time, we have been able to retrieve only three bodies and they have been handed over to the police but we also know more than the number of bodies retrieved have been trapped.

“So we pray that we can remove them on time to save them, but those we have even retrieved have already died so we are helpless and don’t even know what to do” he added.

Personnel from the National Disaster Management organization (NADMO), police and other state officials are assiduously at the site to save the situation.
