7th Parliament busiest & arguably most productive – Akufo-Addo

January 5, 2021

President Akufo-Addo has commended the 7th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana for being busy and productive over the four-year period of its tenure.

The President, who was before the house to deliver his last State of the Nation Address in his first term, noted the legislators passed approximately 50 bills into law within its lifespan.

According to the president, he is able to better appreciate the work of the parliamentarians because he had served three terms as a parliamentarian himself.

“I will like to say a special thank you to the members of this august house, to the members of this 7th Parliament in our Republic. Mr. Speaker, as someone who has served 3 terms in this house and I can safely say that this 7th Parliament has been the busiest ever and arguably the most productive in the history of our country. You have passed almost 50 pieces of Legislative Instruments”, he said.

President Akufo-Addo noted the legislature did not just work on ordinary legislative instruments but those that “wide ranging in scope and reach”.

He mentioned among others the Right to Information Act, the Office of the Special Prosecutors Act and the Ghana Aluminum Development Corporation Act, as some of the legislative instruments the house worked on.

He also observed the composition of the next parliament will vary significantly, a situation he said will require a lot more cooperation and tact to succeed.

“The good people of Ghana have spoken and given parliament an almost equal strength on both sides of the house, we have no choice but to work with the consequences of the desires of the people. The house would have to be more accommodating of each other’s views”
