Sekou Nkrumah has sarcastically hit out at President Nana Akufo-Addo over his recent comment about the history of University of Ghana in which the president placed his uncle, the late J.B Danquah at the centre of the premier university’s establishment.
Nana Akufo-Addo on Tuesday stated it will be completely “appropriate and not at all far-fetched” to describe J.B Danquah as the founder of University of Ghana.
His comment has triggered stormy controversy with some critics suggesting the president is seeking to prepare the grounds to enable him rename the University of Ghana after his uncle.
Their arguments are premised on the recent renaming exercise embarked on by the president which saw the Flagstaff House renamed Jubilee House, UMaT to the George Grant University of Mines and Technology and UPSA after its founder Nana Opoku Ampomah among others.
Many Ghanaians have since last year criticized President Akufo-Addo over what they viewed as attempt by him to rewrite the history of Ghana by zealously projecting his family members, mostly father and uncle.
Commenting on the matter, Mr. Sekou Nkrumah a son of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, took a swipe at President Akufo-Addo stating in a Facebook post ” Your father [Edward Akufo-Addo] was just a ceremonial president! Please give us a break’.
He wondered whether the Kwame Nkrumah Institute of African Studies can be inside JB Danquah University of Ghana.
Some critics have found Sekou Nkrumah’s post ‘needless’ with author Rodney Nkrumah-Boateng describing it being ‘childish to brag’ about his father’s achievements.
“At least, the son of Edward, the ‘mere’ ceremonial president, worked his socks off and rose to become the Executive President of his country. In his own right. Now, that is progress.
