A Senior Lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, GIMPA, Dr. Lord Mawuko-Yevugah has admonished leadership including politicians to demonstrate integrity, which must start at the echelon.
A group of supposed members of pro NPP vigilante group, Delta Force stormed the offices of the National Security Coordinator in the Ashanti Region in an attempt to force him out of office but the operation was foiled.
A similar incident, which happened in 2017 through the same vigilante group, resulted in the arrest of the members but they were later granted bail.
Dr. Mawuko -Yevugah who was speaking on the 3FM’s Sunrise Morning Show noted “we have all kinds of institutions; we have the Court, the Special Prosecutor, Auditor General and day in day out we see the expose that comes out of these but where do they go , what is the outcome? Do we have the leadership to ensure that all these people are brought to book?. He queried.
“And to link this to the vigilante groups, in 2017 we saw similar incident what happened to that, because in the past nobody was punished. I asked the question who is in charge of National Security?. If you look at other jurisdiction, take the USA as an example. The FBI can go after anybody. Whether you are the President, or Secretary of State, they will take you to court. They work independently. The fact that you have appointed me, doesn’t mean I owe my life to you, I owe my life to the fidelity of the constitution. He stressed.
In recent times, Ghanaians have taken to social media to protest the high cost of living and the privileged few enjoying from their “booty”, many of which have been linked to corruption.
Dr. Mawuko- Yevugah who is also a Leading Member of the Center for Social Justice, further blamed the attempted forced removal of the Ashanti Region National Security Coordinator on lack of leadership.
“ Let’s say that is true, that he was fighting people doing galamsey in the Ashanti Region because of that they are chasing him, so who protects him, where is the leadership, who appointed him, who supervises him and what is their reactions when the matter came up. ? An appointee is doing what is right and you have a national war declared on galamsey, then you have an official doing just that, now the person is being chased out and you have other people chasing him so if he is not protected by the state other people who might want to fight will not do that. That is the strategy for me. The unwillingness of the state to stand up for what is right”.
