The West African Examination Council has suspended the timetable for the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) until further notice.
An internal memo by the Council dated March 20, 2020 from the Office of the Registrar in Accra further stated that “the conduct of WASSCE (SC) 2020 be put on hold until further notice”.
This year’s WASSCE was expected to commence on March 30 and end on June 12.
The decision was arrived at following approval by the Chairman of the Council to a proposal from the Secretariat on the need to reschedule the 2020 WASSCE.
The decision to suspend the examination was influenced by the coronavirus pandemic which has affected 16 people in Ghana as of March 20 and claimed over 9000 lives globally.
“The negative impact of the novel and deadly COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent protocols put in place by governments of member countries to prevent the spread of the disease have serious implications for the conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates, 2020 as agreed by the National Offices.”
The memo said the directives putting the examinations on hold would “be reviewed when the health situation improves”.
