Though shortlisted in 2016, Van Niekerk missed the award to Usain Bolt, who has since retired. The London 2017 200m silver medalist will, however, compete with another retiree, Great Britain’s Mo Farah, this year. Farah was also a finalist last year. The two – together with youngster Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar – were shortlisted for the award slated for November 24 in Monaco. In the women’s category, last year’s winner Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia has also been shortlisted for the second consecutive year. But she will face competition from Greece’s Ekaterini Stefanidi, who holds the world and Olympic pole vault titles, and Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam, who won heptathlon Gold at both the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2017 London World Championships.
