USA pip Ghana at FIFA U-17 World Cup

The Black Starlets have to win their final group game against the hosts

Ghana’s Black Starlets did not make the rare chances that came their way count as they were made to pay for them deep in the second half.

USA scored the only goal of the game with 15 minutes to end proceedings to book a place in the Round of 16.

Ayo Akinola scored the goal after tormenting the Starlets’ defence in the second half.

Ghana would have to beat hosts India in the final group game on Thursday if they stand a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stage given Colombia’s win later in the day.

India seem to be the whipping boys after going 1-2 down to Colombia in their second game of the tournament.

They had lost 0-3 to USA in their first game.

In the other games played on Monday, Mali put their campaign back on track with a thumping win over Turkey.

They beat the Europeans 3-0, coming on the back of a disappointing 2-3 loss to Paraguay in their opening game.

The South Americans booked a place in the next round following their 4-2 win over New Zealand.

On Tuesday, Africa’s other qualifiers will be in action.

Guinea would have to beat Costa Rica if they stand a chance of staying in the tournament. They lost 3-1 to Iran in the first game. Iran will face Germany.

Niger play Spain ahead of an obviously difficult final group game against Brazil on Friday.
