U/E Region NPP chairman dies after acid attack

The Upper East Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, has died from an acid attack on him on Wednesday night.

His death was confirmed to www.tv3network.com by a relative in the region who said “he was just confirmed dead by doctors a few minutes ago. This is a very sad time for us and i don’t even know what to say…”.

He was attacked with acid on Wednesday evening by two men, one of whom has been arrested and said to be a brother to National Chairman Paul Afoko.

Our correspondent reports that youth of the party thronged the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where Mr Mahama was receiving emergency care.

But when the news of his death broke, TV3’s Rabiu Mohammed Tanko reports, many burst into tears with some struggling to catch breath for life. Some were stretchered off after fainting from the news.

The attack on Wednesday had been instigated by a recent wrangling between the deceased chairman and Mr Afoko, who together with General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, was chased out of a meeting by men believed to have been mobilised by Mr Mahama.

There is tension here, TV3’s Rabiu Mohammed said.

A fight has broken out while warning shots are being fired, he added.
