Tokyo 2020: Samuel Takyi progresses to quarterfianals in boxing

Samuel Takyi

Ghana boxer Samuel Takyi is one win away from the medal zone after reaching the quarterfinals of the men’s 52-57 Kg Featherweight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Takyi recovered from a slow start to beat his opponent from Ecuador Jean Carlos Caicedo by unanimous decision on Wednesday morning.

The 20-year-old won 5-0 as all five judges scored the bout in his favour.

He becomes the second Ghanaian boxer to advance to the next round after Black Bombers captain Sulemanu Tetteh claimed a slim victory on Monday.

Ghana’s third boxer at the games, Shakul Samed will take on Turkey’s Bayram Malkan in the round of 16 of men’s light heavyweight on Wednesday at 11:12 GMT.

Meanwhile, before Takyi’s fight, Judoka Kwadwo Anani lost to a more experienced opponent from South Korea.
