‘This is not the time to harass people with taxes’ – Mahama to gov’t

November 14, 2018
John Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has accused the Akufo-Addo government of deceiving Ghanaians, claiming it has failed to deliver on its promise to move Ghana’s economy from taxation to production.

Ahead of the December 2016 elections, the New Patriotic Party led by President Nana Akufo-Addo chastised the Mahama-led government of overburdening Ghanaians with too many taxes and promised to move away from that to production if given the mandate.

But Mahama said almost two years in office, the Akufo-Addo government has failed to fulfill that promise and rather widening the tax next.

He said this while addressing separate meetings with delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Ejisu and Subin constituencies as part of his four-day flagbearership campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.

The former President the downturn in economic activities in the country has caused many businesses to suffer and consequently finding it difficult to honour their tax obligations.

“There is no economic activity in this country. Consumption has gone down, nobody is buying anything and so this is not the time to harass people with taxes”, Mr Mahama added.

He said he is committed to working hard to provide jobs and reducing the high cost of living in the country when elected in the 2020 elections, hence urged NDC delegates to unite and work hard for the victory of the NDC.
