The coalition of Tarkwa-Nsuaem Divisional Chiefs have expressed their profound gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for appointing the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, George Mireku-Duker as the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.

According to them, the appointment reflects the heritage of what Tarkwa Nsuaem is “best known for in history”.

“Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal accounts significantly towards the exploitation of mineral resources in the country which have been a strong backbone of Ghana’s economic growth. Against this backdrop, we are very enthused to state that, this is the first time a legislator of the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency has been appointed a sector Minister…”.

At a press conference, Chairman of the Coalition of Tarkwa-Nsuaem Divisional Chiefs and Kingmaker of Wassa-Fiase Traditional Council Nana Kwabena Gyan II said they have no doubt in their minds that George Mireku-Duker “will work assiduously and to the best of his ability and support the substantive minister to ensure that President Akufo-Addo’s vision for the Lands and Natural Resources ministry is achieved”.

“We all know what has been happening to our forest and water bodies. How galamsey is wreaking havoc on our environment. Honorable Mireku-Duker comes to the position with a lot of rich experience in natural resource governance. He has worked with reputable civil society organizations in the extractive sector and so we believe that he will do well”.

    MCE nomination

The chiefs also pleaded with President Akufo-Addo to retain Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Benjamin Kesse.

According to them, Mr. Kesse since his appointment has demonstrated that he will be able to guide Tarkwa Nsuaem’s development agenda.

They are of the firm belief that the development of Tarkwa Nsuaem will suffer if the President gives the nod to someone who cannot work with the MP.

“We will also use this opportunity to humbly remind the President that, we are for the development of Tarkwa-Nsuaem and believes that, the MP should be supported by a hardworking and a dedicated Municipal Chief Executive. On this call, we humbly call on Mr. President to re-appoint Hon. Benjamin Kessie since the latter has performed remarkably in a short period of time with a very cordial working relationship with the MP and Nananom.

“…the combination of the duo coupled with our support will accelerate the needed development in Tarkwa-Nsauem”, they assured

    Tarkwa Roads

While making the plea, they also reminded the President to help tackle the deplorable nature of roads in Tarkwa Nsuaem.

They noted that it is a pity that Tarkwa contributes so much to the development of the country and yet there is no commensurate development.

“Tarkwa roads are in a very bad state. We are very much aware of the efforts by the Political leadership to fix it. We are also privy to information that, contractor for the Agona-Nkwanta-Tarkwa road is expected on site next month. Therefore, we use this opportunity to plead with Mr. President and all those that matter to ensure that, Tarkwa’s road infrastructure is properly worked on and urgently”.

He added: “We want to remember this government as a government that significantly improved the condition of Tarkwa roads.”
