Strika of ‘Beast of No Nation’ now begs for alms

It appears that the youngster who played Strika, the mute kid in the fabled ‘Beast of No Nation’ that made Abraham Attah find his way to international stardom, has now taken to begging on the streets of Accra for survival.

A Facebooker Caleb Nii Boye, posted how he was depressed Monday morning meeting Strika while on his way to the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

He wrote: “I am sad this morning, I was headed to the Ghana Institute of Journalism campus and I met Strika. You would ask who is Strika? Striker starred in the movie Beast of No Nation. The said film that made Abraham Attah.

“Today I met him begging for money on the road leading to GIJ. I called him and brought him to campus. Speaking to him he tells me he now works with a gentleman who sells yam at the Abgobgloshe Market. He stays with his grandma at North Kaneshie”, he posted.

The post has since been deleted but has been able to get screenshots of the post.

If the narrative of Caleb is anything to go by, it will come as a shock to many because renowned Ghanaian actor, Kobina Amissah-Sam, who played the role of Abraham Attah’s father in Beast of  No Nation, had revealed in a media interview that the kids were well catered for.

He’s quoted as saying, “they have not been forgotten, and they have really been taken care of. They are not lacking now as they used to, so everything is cool for them now. He has never been to school before but after the production, producers of the movie felt that they have to put him in school. I don’t think that it is Netflix that is taking care of them, it is the producer who wants to help the kids, Abraham, Strika and there is one other guy called Justice who stepped on Agu’s head when he was caught.”

Meanwhile, Strika has also granted a media interview where he denied ever seeing some $30,000 that was promised him after the award-winning movie.

He, however, disclosed that he was paid GHC 10,000 for “Jungle Justice”, a movie he starred in after “Beast of No Nation”, but a manager by the name, Mawuko, used all the monies to buy him “clothes and shoes”.

Meanwhile, Ama K. Abebrese who also starred in the Beast of No Nation has posted a noted by Kobina Sam with a picture of Strika to deny that the boy has been neglected.

“He’s been given everything in this world… He was paid same as Abraham and we have managed to get him movie roles…
The producers didn’t let him go back to the streets after the movie. They sponsored his education at a Montessori school in cape coast with Abraham Attah… He is just being stubborn. Nobody left him in the streets. He was brought to a proper home… I know this for a fact cos I’m one of his guardians.
He lied to the guy who found him…
He has chosen that part of life. -Kobina Sam (One of his guardians)”
