Stanbic Bank sets record straight on arrest of customer at banking hall

Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited has cleared the air on accusations by a customer that bank officials aided police to get him arrested while he went to one of the branches to withdraw money.

The customer had narrated on Tell It All on Facebook that he was picked up by police officers in the company of two staff of the bank when he visited the branch to withdraw GH¢100.

“When I got there, the teller told me that my account has been frozen so I should wait. About 5mins later, two staff of @stanbic Bank Ghana came with police officers to arrest me,” he wrote.

“At that time, I didn’t know what was going on but I was taken to Police station. I wrote my statement as I have written above and was put in cell after.”

He lamented how he had “wrongfully spent 24 hours behind bars”.

But in a statement dated Wednesday, February 9, Stanbic Ghana stressed that it only assisted the police as part of their investigations.

“Mindful of our country’s laws on Data Protection and the Banking Act, we have first and foremost protected our customer’s information, even in the face of material misstatements,” the statement signed by Communications Manager Kojo Akoi Larbi said.

It added that a detailed narration of the events can only be put in the pubic domain by the express permission of the client or by a court order.

“Despite the active case, we have provided and continue to offer a full suite of banking services to our customer.

“Our obligation to customers and to providing a safe and secure banking environment shall always come first.”
