World Cup play-off: Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo ruled out of Nigeria tie

Bristol City have confirmed striker Antoine Semenyo will not honour his debut Black Stars call-up because of a serious injury.

Semenyo injured his knee this past weekend and has been ruled out of the Black Stars clash with Nigeria in the 2022 World Cup play-off.

“The striker sustained a knee injury on Saturday against West Brom and has not flown to Africa to join up with the Ghana squad for their World Cup qualifiers, instead remaining in Bristol for further assessment,” the club announced on Monday.

3news last week broke the news of Semenyo’s inclusion in the squad for the two key games.

The striker has been terrific this season, with 13 goal contributions (scoring six and assisting seven) in his last 18 league games.

Semenyo in February was named English Championship Player of the Month for January.

He was born in west London to a Ghanaian father.

Ghana and Nigeria will lock horns twice in the space of four days with the winner qualifying for World Cup finals in Qatar.

The first leg will be played on Friday, March 25 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi with the return leg on 29 March in Abuja.
