Ghana Football Association confirmed Black Stars goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott, who was ruled out of the World Cup because of injury, will be in Qatar to support his teammates ahead of their opener against Portugal.

Wollacott suffered a fractured finger just before Ghana’s final World Cup squad was announced. He was warming up for a league game for Charlton Athletic when tragedy struck.

The 26-year-old was devastated when scans revealed he would be unable to compete in the World Cup, as he required surgery.

Wollacott’s surgery went well over the weekend, and the GFA has arranged for him to join the Black Stars camp in Doha.

“Joseph Wollacott who is not part of the final squad for the 2022 World Cup will join the team’s base in Qatar for the match against Portugal,” the GFA wrote on their website.

“Goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott will travel to Doha on Tuesday, November 22, to support the Black Stars in their opening Group H match on Thursday.”

“He will join the Black Stars two days before the match against the European country.”

After making his debut at the Cape Coast stadium against Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier, Wollacott has been the preferred first choice for Ghana and played a key role in Ghana’s return to the World Cup.

In his absence, Otto Addo is likely to start Lawrence Ati-Zigi in Ghana’s first match against Portugal on Thursday.
