The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has justified the decision not to disclose the budget for the Black Stars ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, arguing that it could have been a distraction for the team.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa Sports on Tuesday, March 25, Adams explained, “People were asking me to disclose the budget for the games, but I kept asking myself what the budget would do for the team ahead of the games. Sometimes, some situations create distractions, so we should weigh every situation before making a decision.”
However, his position appears to contradict President John Dramani Mahama’s earlier directive. Upon swearing Adams into office, the President had emphasised the need for transparency in matters concerning the Black Stars’ budget and financial dealings.
The comments come in the wake of the Black Stars’ back-to-back victories in their 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.
Ghana defeated Chad 5-0 in Accra on Friday, March 21, before securing another impressive 3-0 win against Madagascar in Morocco on Monday, March 24.

The two victories put the senior national team in pole position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The issue of financial accountability in Ghanaian football has long been a subject of debate, with fans and Ghanaians in general demanding greater openness regarding how funds are allocated for national team activities.
Adams’ remarks have reignited discussions on whether financial disclosures could impact team performance or if transparency should take precedence.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the Ministry of Sports will handle financial disclosures in the future, especially given the President’s stance on the matter.
