South Africa secure historic Women’s World Cup victory, advance to last 16

South Africa

South Africa clinched their first-ever Women’s World Cup victory with a remarkable 3-2 win over Italy in Wellington.

Thembi Kgatlana’s dramatic 92nd-minute goal proved decisive, propelling South Africa into the last 16 and making history for their nation.

Italy had initially taken the lead as Arianna Caruso converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review confirmed a foul by Karabo Dhlamini inside the box. Caruso’s calm finish put Italy in control of their World Cup destiny.

However, South Africa capitalised on an own goal by Benedetta Orsi to level the score. Hildah Magaia then showcased her skills, latching onto Kgatlana’s well-placed pass to put South Africa ahead. Italy responded as Caruso headed in from a corner, following a VAR check that upheld the goal.

The match reached a crescendo when Magaia set up Kgatlana, who sealed South Africa’s victory with a clinical finish, sparking jubilation among the players and fans alike.

They are set to face Group E winners, the Netherlands, on Sunday.
