Richard Kingson expects Ghana to win 2023 AFCON

Former Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingson is upbeat ahead of Ghana’s doubleheader against Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers this month.

Head coach Chris Houghton is set to name his first Black Stars squad and prepare them for the two games as Ghana seek to make their 24th appearance in the competition while also attempting to claim their fifth title.

As a result, the Black Stars goalkeeper’s coach has urged Ghanaians to support whoever the coach invites and to consider the qualification already obtained. Beyond the qualifiers, he believes Ghana will go on to win the title in Ivory Coast next year.

“I will tell Ghanaians to exercise patience and support the team. Yes, everyone has his choice of players but we must all support those the coaches will select.

“I am a man of faith and I know we are going to qualify for the next AFCON and I’m also looking forward that Ghana winning the trophy. For the qualification, I know we will secure it but I’m also thinking about winning the AFCON and bringing the Cup home.

“We have to work towards it and surely with faith Ghana will win it,” said Kingson on Akoma FM in Kumasi.

The Black Stars last won the AFCON in 1982 and have reached the finals three times since then.

They were defeated by Ivory Coast in 1992, Egypt in 2010, and Ivory Coast once more in 2015.

Richard Kingson was Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2008 and 2010 AFCONs, leading the country to the latter’s final as captain.

Ghana will host Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on March 23 before traveling to Luanda, Angola for the return leg four days later.

On the table, both teams are tied on four points with Central African Republic and Madagascar following with a point each in Group E.
