PSG boss privileged to coach ‘best player in history’ as Messi leaves

PSG manager Christophe Galtier expressed his privilege at coaching the “best player in history” as he confirmed Lionel Messi’s departure from the club.

Galtier announced that Saturday’s match against Clermont Foot would be the Argentine legend’s final game for the French club, bringing an end to his two-season spell.

Speaking on Thursday, Galtier stated, “I had the privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. This will be his last match at the Parc des Princes, and I hope that he will receive the warmest of welcomes.”

Messi has scored 21 goals and provided 20 assists for PSG in all competitions this season, helping the club successfully retain the French title.

“He has been an integral part of the team this season, always available. I believe that the criticisms and comments made about him are unjustified,” Galtier asserted.

Messi joined PSG as a free agent in 2021, following his departure from Barcelona due to the Spanish club’s economic difficulties.

While there was an option for Messi to extend his initial two-year contract with PSG, worth £25m per year after tax, plus bonuses, he has decided against staying on.

The relationship between Messi and the PSG fans has deteriorated, with the Argentine captain facing whistles from the crowd as the team fell short in their quest for Champions League glory. Additionally, he faced suspension by the club for an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia.

Although rumours suggest a potential return to Barcelona, Messi has staggering offers from Saudi Arabia and the United States.
