South Africa’s hockey teams have withdrawn from the hockey competition at the 2023 African Games, citing concerns over the poor pitch at the Theodosia Okoh stadium in Accra, 3Sports understands.

The team expressed dissatisfaction with the preparation efforts in place and voiced fears that the substandard pitch could lead to long-term injuries for their players.

In light of these concerns, both the male and female teams have opted to pull out of the competition to safeguard the well-being of their Olympic-bound players.

Assurances were given by Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif that efforts were underway to rectify the delayed readiness of the hockey pitch for the Games and ensure that the hockey facility meets the required standards.

“We had back and forth with the hockey federation” because the turf that was recommended by the contractor was rejected by the federation as they opted for a different turf only available in Germany.

“So we needed to settle on this turf and the contractor is working on it.

“I’m in touch with the African hockey president as well as Ghana’s and the contractor.”

“Be rest assured that the facility is going to be in shape to ensure that hockey also come on board”

However, these efforts have not met the expectations of the South African teams, known for their prowess in the sport of hockey.

Meanwhile, Egypt beat Nigeria 5-4 in the group stage of the Men’s competition on Monday with other interesting fixtures coming back.

Host nation Ghana will have their female side play Nigeria later on Monday before the male side take on Kenya.
