Team Ghana exhibited remarkable strength and technical prowess in armwrestling, securing an impressive total of 21 medals at the 2023 African Games.

On the opening day of the arm wrestling competition, Ghana clinched an outstanding haul of 4 gold, 10 silver, and 7 bronze medals, showcasing their dominance in the sport and igniting hopes for a promising resurgence.

With this remarkable achievement, Ghana’s total medal count now stands at 26, placing the nation in the 7th position on the overall medal table. The breakdown of Ghana’s medals includes 5 gold, 13 silver, and 8 bronze.

As the arm wrestling competition continues into its second day, Ghana remains determined to climb higher on the medal table, with hopes of adding more medals to their tally.

Egypt however, currently leads the Armwrestling table despite scooping just nine medals. This is so because they won seven gold medals more valuable than Ghana’s four. Ghana sits second but hopes to leapfrog the North Africans on Saturday.

On the overall medal table where Ghana sits seventh, Egypt continues to dominate with 144 medals (including 83, gold, 33 silver and 38 bronze). The closest to Egypt is Nigeria which has 68 medals.

In addition to their success in arm wrestling, Ghana’s performance in other sporting disciplines has also contributed to their medal haul, with previous achievements in weightlifting and swimming.

In weightlifting, Winnifred Ntumi set the pace with Gahna’s first three medals (1 gold and 2 silvers) before Ghana’s swimming team captain Abeiku Jackson secured two medals in addition: One silver and one bronze in Men’s 50m and 100m Butterfly respectively.

Ghana has now surpassed their record in the 2019 edition where they finished 15th on the table with a total of 13 medals.

Furthermore, with both the Men’s and Women’s football teams reaching the semifinals, there are additional medal opportunities for Team Ghana as they continue to strive for excellence and glory at the 2023 African Games. There is also hope for the athletics team who will begin competing from Monday, March 18, 2024.
