Mexico handed Ghana their first defeat under coach Chris Hughton, clinching a 2-0 victory in an international friendly at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday.

This marked Hughton’s first loss since taking charge of the Black Stars earlier this year.

Hughton had maintained an unbeaten record with three wins in five games leading up to this match. However, as anticipated, Mexico proved to be a formidable side. Their winning streak against Ghana extended to four games, with Hirving Lozano and Uriel Antuna scoring crucial goals in the second half to seal a 2-0 win.

Ghana started the game with a three-back formation consisting of Stephan Ambrosius, Nicholas Opoku, and Joseph Aidoo, while Thomas Partey and Elisha Owusu partnered in midfield. Antoine Semenyo led the frontline, flanked by Mohammed Kudus and Joseph Paintsil on the wings, while Kingsley Schindler and Gideon Mensah operated as wingbacks.

The Black Stars had a promising start, but a 14th-minute cross from Joseph Paintsil went astray. In the 27th minute, Ghana were forced to make a substitution as Joseph Aidoo made way for Alidu Seidu due to a suspected ligament injury.

Despite maintaining composure at the back and controlling key moments in the game, Ghana struggled to find the necessary firepower upfront to punish the opponents. Mexico seized the opportunity, with Lozano opening the scoring with a brilliant effort in the 57th minute.

Hughton made changes by introducing Ernest Nuamah, Jordan Ayew, and Inaki Williams for Kingsley Schindler, Joseph Paintsil, and Antoine Semenyo. Mexico extended their lead in the 72nd minute through Antuna Romero, securing a 4th successive win over Ghana.

Next, the Black Stars will face the United States of America at GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
