Kotoko rule themselves out of Africa

Asante Kotoko Chief Executive Officer Nana Yaw Amponsah has ruled out the club from playing in the CAF interclub competitions next season due to the cost involved.

Double winners Hearts of Oak have confirmed they will play in the Champions League, however, it is unknown yet which club will accompany them by representing Ghana in the Confederation Cup.

FA Cup finalist AshantiGold have been ruled, making the slot available for Asante Kotoko and Medeama who both are on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) List of Licensed Clubs.

However, Kotoko prefer to save money and build a competitive team that can challenge for titles next season, as well as improve their Adako Jachie training facility.

“The cost of going to Africa is not easy, and if I am to tell you, the cost involved in going to Africa last year can provide us with an Astroturf at Adako Jachie and double of what we are doing now and many more,” Amponsah is reported to have said on Oyerepa TV.

“We must take advantage of that to develop and improve our squad and prepare them to win the league and FA cup next season if possible.

“We also need to develop our infrastructure so we can console ourselves with It.” he added.

Kotoko are two time winners of the CAF Champions League. Their last success in Africa, however, came in 1983.
