Ivory Coast started their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau in Group A.

Seko Fofana scored the opening goal in the fourth minute, firing a powerful shot from inside the area into the bottom right corner.

The hosts dominated the first half, with Fofana nearly doubling the lead before halftime, but his effort was tipped onto the crossbar by Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Ouparine Djoco.

In the second half, Jean-Philippe Krasso added the second goal for Ivory Coast, showcasing excellent close control and finishing with a left-foot shot from eight yards out. Despite substitute Franculino’s attempt to pull one back for Guinea-Bissau, the Elephants held firm to secure all three points.

Ivory Coast’s victory was particularly impressive given the absence of star striker Sebastien Haller due to injury. However, Fofana’s performance ensured that his team didn’t miss him too much, as they look to win their third African title following successes in 1992 and 2015.

Meanwhile, Nigeria will take on Equatorial Guinea in the second Group A match earlier on Sunday, followed by Egypt-Mozambique and Ghana-Cape Verde matches in Group B.
