Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has admitted his side’s performance against the Central African Republic (CAR) could have been better despite securing victory.

The Black Stars got off to a slow start against the Wild Beasts in their penultimate match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers when they surrendered in the 25th minute, giving their opponents hope of snapping a lengthy winless streak at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Ghana however bounced back to win 2-1 at the end of the game courtesy of a free-kick goal from Mohammed Kudus in the 43rd minute and a late strike from substitute Ernest Nuamah in the 88th minute.

Hughton acknowledged in a post-game press conference that his team had started the game sluggishly. However, he believes that it can occasionally be a good strategy, as it was when Gahna capitalised on that to secure the victory in this particular game.

“We could have played better in the first half but sometimes you have to wait for the game to open up…I think we showed a good level today. In the end, we could have been more comfortable,” he said

The victory means Ghana will be making their 24th appearance at the AFCON with the next edition to be held in Ivory Coast next year.
