Barcelona head coach, Xavi Hernandez, has reversed his decision to leave the club at the end of the season, opting to honour his contract until June 2025.

The 44-year-old, who had initially announced his intention to step down in January, has decided to extend his tenure following discussions with club president Joan Laporta.

Xavi took over as Barcelona’s coach in November 2021 after departing from Qatari club Al Sadd. His first full season in charge saw Barcelona clinch the Spanish title in 2022-23.

However, the current campaign has presented challenges, with the team trailing La Liga leaders Real Madrid by 11 points with six games remaining.

Despite a recent exit from the Champions League following a quarter-final defeat to Paris St-Germain, Laporta’s desire for Xavi to continue has influenced the coach’s change of heart.

Xavi, who amassed 25 honours during his esteemed playing career at Barcelona, initially expressed a sense of liberation upon announcing his departure. However, concerns regarding the club’s lack of protection and direction led to his decision to leave.

Following a period of reflection and improved results for the team, including a 10-game unbeaten streak in the league, Xavi reconsidered his stance.
