Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he recently turned down an offer to coach one of the men’s football national teams due to timing concerns.
Gyan disclosed that although he holds a UEFA License B coaching certificate, he declined the coaching appointment as he felt the timing was inappropriate.
“The timing was wrong but let us see what happens in the future,” Gyan stated during the interview with Asempa FM, leaving open the possibility of coaching a national team at a later date.
“I won’t entirely rule out the possibility to coach because we don’t know what the future holds.”
Gyan, who gained widespread recognition for his outstanding performances with the Black Stars, holds the record for the highest goal-scoring tally for Ghana and is Africa’s top scorer at the World Cup, with six goals to his name. Over his illustrious career, he scored 51 goals in 109 appearances for the national team.
The former striker represented Ghana in three World Cup tournaments – in 2006, 2010, and 2014 – held in Germany, South Africa, and Brazil, respectively. He was also regular for the team between 2008 and 2017 where the team reached the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations in each competition within the period.
Throughout his playing career, Gyan showcased his talent at various clubs, including Liberty Professionals, Stade Rennes, Udinese, Sunderland, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Kayerispor, NorthEast United, and Legon Cities.

Gyan officially announced his retirement from professional football in June 2023, culminating a career marked by remarkable achievements and contributions to Ghanaian football.
While Gyan has declined the coaching opportunity for now, his vast experience and knowledge of the game could potentially make him a valuable asset to any national team in the future.
