Ugochukwu rescues Chelsea in final pre-season game

Lesley Ugochukwu scored a dramatic last-minute equaliser as Chelsea’s pre-season finale under new manager Enzo Maresca ended in a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan.

The match, held in sweltering conditions, was a final workout before the Premier League season kicks off.

Inter Milan took the lead in the 26th minute when Thuram finished a pass from Joaquin Correa with a powerful strike into the top corner.

Chelsea, however, responded strongly, with Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer making notable contributions. Cucurella, recently celebrated for his role in Spain’s Euro 2024 win, and Palmer, who played a key role in England’s runner-up finish, showcased their abilities.

Nicolas Jackson of Senegal also made his first appearance of the pre-season.

The equaliser came in the 90th minute when Palmer’s set-piece was cleared only as far as Ugochukwu. The French midfielder struck a well-timed half-volley that beat Inter’s goalkeeper Sommer.

Enzo Fernandez captained the side, with notable performances from Wesley Fofana, Robert Sanchez, and Mykhailo Mudryk.

With captain Reece James sidelined for several weeks, Maresca will be eager to start the new season positively as Chelsea prepare to face reigning champions Manchester City next weekend.
