San Marino has made history by winning their first-ever competitive match, defeating Liechtenstein 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday.
This victory ends a staggering 20-year winless streak, with their last triumph occurring in 2004, also against Liechtenstein.
The match, while not a clash of football giants, saw San Marino, currently ranked 210th in FIFA standings, secure a landmark win thanks to a goal from 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli in the 53rd minute. Sensoli’s strike, which came after a defensive error by Liechtenstein, sent the home fans into wild celebrations, marking a moment of joy for a nation that has endured 140 matches without a victory in competitive play.
Since 2004, the team has faced a long series of defeats, recording only two wins in 206 matches overall. The victory on Thursday not only lifts the spirits of the players and fans but also places San Marino at the top of Group 1 in League D of the Nations League, alongside Gibraltar.
The team will now look to build on this success as they prepare for their next match against Moldova, hoping to continue their newfound momentum.
