Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola anticipates a determined Real Madrid seeking revenge following their comprehensive defeat in last season’s Champions League, where City triumphed 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

Despite their previous success, Guardiola acknowledges the challenge Real Madrid presents in Tuesday’s quarter-final first leg, emphasizing that replicating such a result is improbable.

“Beating Real Madrid twice in a row is impossible,” Guardiola stated. “They have learned and will want revenge. They have pride.”

Echoing Guardiola’s sentiments, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti emphasized the need for mental strength this time around.

Reflecting on their previous encounter, Ancelotti admitted deficiencies in courage and personality, crucial elements in high-stakes matches.

“Courage and personality are fundamental in this type of game, we lacked them in the second leg,” he remarked.

Discussing tactical strategies for the upcoming fixture, former Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, who played a pivotal role in containing Erling Haaland in last season’s first leg, expressed his readiness to face City’s formidable attackers.

“The plan is to try and control dangerous players like Phil Foden, [Kevin] de Bruyne and, of course, Haaland,” Rudiger revealed.

Real Madrid, bolstered by the addition of midfielder Jude Bellingham this season, acknowledge his significant contributions, particularly in the offensive aspects of the game.

Ancelotti praised Bellingham’s maturity and professionalism, highlighting his versatility and impact on the team. “He’s having a very good season in the penalty box,” Ancelotti noted.

“He’s physically very strong and he’s helping us a lot in the defensive aspects and up front, to create space and provide movement. He’s very mature.”
