Otto Addo refuses to explain Andre Ayew’s continued exclusion from Black Stars

Ghana coach Otto Addo has chosen not to elaborate on the decision to exclude captain Andre Ayew from the squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

Ayew’s omission marks the second consecutive time he has been left out, stirring speculation and concern.

Addo addressed the situation briefly, stating, “We did quite well playing young players, and I know it will get tough. I don’t want to explain myself why Andre is not here.”

His refusal to provide further details comes amid growing debate over Ayew’s absence.

Ayew, who is currently without a club, was previously excluded from the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, despite being an experienced player with 120 caps and 24 goals for Ghana.

Coach Addo had earlier suggested that Ayew’s omission did not signal the end of his international career and that the door remained open for his return. However, Ayew’s continued exclusion now raises questions about his future with the national team.

Ghana will face Angola at home on September 5, 2024, and travel to Niger for their second Group F match on September 9, 2024.
