English forward Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United, completing a permanent move to Olympique Marseille.
The striker has signed a five-year contract with the French club, extending through 2029, in a deal worth up to €31.6 million (£26.6 million).
Greenwood, a product of Manchester United’s academy, was enjoying a promising career in England but faced suspension in January 2022 due to serious charges, including attempted rape and assault. These accusations were dropped in February 2023. He played last season on loan at Getafe, where he managed to revive his career.
The announcement of Marseille’s intention to sign Greenwood faced criticism from the city’s mayor. Despite the controversy, Greenwood’s move marks a new chapter in his career.
Greenwood made his competitive senior debut for Manchester United in 2019 as a substitute against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League. He scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned his only England cap in 2020.
In August 2023, Manchester United announced that Greenwood would leave the club by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. He subsequently joined La Liga side Getafe in September, where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances.
Manchester United, who wished Greenwood well on their website, have included a sizeable sell-on clause in their deal with Marseille.
Marseille is set to face Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on August 3 at Bradford City’s Valley Parade, with the Stadium of Light unavailable due to renovation work.
Greenwood, born in Bradford, could make his first appearance back in England since his arrest in January 2022 following allegations surrounding material published online.
