Kurt Okraku vows to introduce VAR in Ghana Premier League

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has confirmed plans to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology into the Ghana Premier League.

The move comes in response to concerns about officiating inconsistencies in the domestic league.

While VAR has become a staple in many top-tier competitions, Okraku is exploring more affordable options suitable for developing nations like Ghana, as suggested by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the 73rd edition of the FIFA Congress last year.

“We are going to introduce VAR into our football. Whatever we will do to introduce VAR into football, we will, as part of our overall strategy for improving refereeing starting from our GPL, we will. It’s coming,” Okraku stated during the Meet the Press event in Suyani.

VAR has already been used in Ghana, first during the 2022 World Cup playoff against Nigeria at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, and more recently during Dreams FC’s CAF Confederation Cup knockout matches last season.

With this commitment, the GFA aims to improve the fairness and credibility of the Ghana Premier League.
