Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku faced boos from fans in Kumasi during the Kufuor Cup game between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman.

Despite Kotoko’s victory on Sunday night, the anticipated joyous moment of Okraku presenting the trophy to the champions was overshadowed by the loud hooting from displeased fans.

The fans’ dissatisfaction continued as Okraku made his way to his car, intensifying the pressure on football authorities, including the GFA.

This incident follows the recent #SaveGhanaFootball demonstration held in Accra on February 14, 2024, where protesters advocated for changes in the football structure to address poor performances by various national teams, including the Black Stars’ disappointing showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The demonstration, which started at Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and concluded at the Black Stars Square, culminated in the submission of a petition to the Speaker of Parliament. Football enthusiasts participating in the protest called for reforms to improve the sport in the country, intensifying the scrutiny on football authorities.

While Asante Kotoko celebrated their Kufuor Cup victory, the unexpected backlash against GFA President Kurt Okraku highlighted the growing discontent among fans and the increased pressure on authorities to address concerns raised during the #SaveGhanaFootball demonstration.

Kotoko win Kufuor Cup

Asante Kotoko faced an early setback with Abdul Rahman scoring for Nsoatreman just before halftime.

However, the second half saw a momentum shift when Steven Mukwala netted a brilliant equalizer in the 57th minute, courtesy of Lamptey’s precise corner kick. Goalkeeper Frederick Asare’s remarkable save from Nurudeen’s penalty maintained the level score.

The turning point unfolded in the 67th minute, as Peter Amidu capitalized on a well-executed pass to secure victory for Asante Kotoko. Receiving a precise pass from Lamptey, Amidu scored with a first-time shot, ultimately sealing the win for the Porcupines.

The win is a relief for Prosper Ogum’s men who suffered an FA Cup exit a few days ago
