Ghanaian politician and Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Patrick Boamah, has expressed concerns over the declining attendance at Asante Kotoko matches, warning that the club has significant work to do to reclaim its past greatness.
Speaking on Akoma FM after Kotoko’s narrow 1-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea on Wednesday, Boamah highlighted the troubling decline in fan turnout, which he believes undermines the club’s rich legacy and reputation.
Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most successful and historic clubs, has long been revered as a football powerhouse. However, Boamah noted that the current level of fan engagement does not align with the club’s stature.
“The club has a lot of work to do. We need to develop more talent and bring Kotoko’s glory back to Kumasi,” he stated.
“It excites Asanteman, Kumasi, and the country as a whole when Kotoko thrives because we have fans worldwide. But we cannot continue playing in an empty stadium. The attendance was just about 20%, which does not reflect the Asante Kotoko we know.”
Boamah urged Kotoko to look beyond local dominance and strive for success on the African stage, citing clubs like Al Ahly, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns as models of consistent continental excellence.
“We must attract top players, win more games, return to Africa, and challenge for the African title again,” he emphasized.
“Kotoko once competed with teams like Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Orlando Pirates. If we want to return to those days, there is a lot of work to be done.”
Despite these concerns, Kotoko currently leads the Ghana Premier League table with 45 points from 24 matches, positioning themselves well in the title race. However, Boamah believes that true success will only come when the club regains its dominance both locally and on the continent.
